Apprentice Scheme
David Hughes Dance is proud to mentor and support young professional dancers, contributing to their existing training with experience of and exposure to the workings of a major company. This includes continued training in class with the Artistic Director and other members of the company, learning roles within the repertoire of the company and also mentoring in the administration and management of dance. Your support can help to ensure that this process of guidance and mentoring continues and that further young professionals can benefit from the depth of knowledge and experience which exists within the organisation.

Education
DHDP is generous with its knowledge, endeavouring to learn as much as teach. In support of its world-class repertoire and productions, the company builds on the relationship between studio and stage by delivering a comprehensive programme of quality education that increases knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of the artistic work.
There is a passion within our organisation to access the remote areas of Scotland in addition to the major cities in order to ensure that every child has the chance to dance, to present alternatives to the conventional hobbies and to encourage health and fitness through physical expression. The spectrum of styles used within DHD allows us to deliver unique combinations of movement…but the delivery comes from artists who are recognised for being at the forefront of their style, proven specialists - this is the difference with education received from David Hughes Dance.
Wherever possible the company works with Local Authorities, schools and community groups to support touring and performances in those particular regions. This usually culminates in a ‘curtainraiser’ event where the young dancers are given the opportunity to be choreographed on and to work alongside company members. The aim is to provide an experience which is as close to a genuine working environment as possible.
DHDP also conducts intensive week-long choreographic residencies with schools in the holidays of each year; October and February. This involves the development of new movement vocabulary, promotion of health and building communication skills and confidence levels through exposure to dance. These programmes will be offered in support of the new Curriculum for Excellence government guidelines.
In addition to working with community dancers, DHDP also continues to deliver professional technique and repertoire classes, investing in the existing community of professionals within Scotland and allowing access to the choreographers/choreographies in the company’s possession.
DHDP believes that these programmes of education cannot simply be one-off single events. In order to successfully build partnerships of this nature, ongoing investment is imperative.
